How this estimate works

  • Self-employment tax is 15.3% of 92.35% of your profit: 12.4% Social Security up to the $184,500 wage base (less any W-2 wages) and 2.9% Medicare.
  • Income tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 joint), after deducting half of self-employment tax.
  • The QBI deduction is simplified to 20% of profit, limited to 20% of taxable income. It phases down for some businesses at higher incomes.
  • The suggested payment is the smaller safe harbor: 90% of this year’s tax, or 100% (110% for higher incomes) of last year’s, less withholding, split into four.
  • It leaves out credits, state tax, the 0.9% additional Medicare tax, and other deductions. Treat it as a starting point.

Payments are due April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026, January 15, and 2027. Read the quarterly taxes guide for who has to pay and how.
