How to fill it in
- Write each trip on the day you drive it. A log kept at the time carries far more weight than one rebuilt later.
- Make the business purpose specific: “Client walkthrough, 14 Elm St,” not “business.”
- Record both odometer readings or the trip miles, and the odometer at the start and end of the year.
- Leave commutes between home and a regular workplace off the log; they aren’t deductible.
Read what the IRS expects in a mileage log, then work out the deduction with the mileage calculator.
