spentr vs QuickBooks Self-Employed

A QuickBooks Self-Employed alternative for receipts and miles

Intuit has replaced QuickBooks Self-Employed with QuickBooks Solopreneur, and the move hasn’t been automatic for everyone. If what you really used it for was capturing receipts, logging miles, and seeing your Schedule C picture, spentr is built for exactly that.

Updated · General information, not tax advice

Where QuickBooks Self-Employed fits

  • QuickBooks Solopreneur is Intuit’s current product for one-person businesses, positioned as bookkeeping software within the wider QuickBooks family.
  • QuickBooks products connect with Intuit’s tax and accounting ecosystem, which suits people who already file with Intuit tools or whose accountant works in QuickBooks.

What spentr is built for

  • AI receipt scanning from photos, forwarded emails, and Amazon orders (Amazon import on Pro)
  • Business mileage, logged by hand or recorded hands-free in the background (Pro)
  • Material participation hours by property for short-term rental owners (Pro)
  • Spencer, an assistant that answers questions from your own receipts and trips
  • Quarterly estimates (Pro), plus Schedule C categories and PDF exports with receipt images (Business)
  • A free plan with 10 AI scans a month, on iPhone and the web

When QuickBooks Self-Employed may suit you better

  • You need invoicing, bank-feed reconciliation, or full bookkeeping. spentr is a receipts, mileage, and hours tracker, not an accounting ledger.
  • Your accountant requires you to work inside QuickBooks.
  • You use Android; spentr is iPhone and web only for now.

Switching to spentr

  1. Export your past data (CSV or PDF) from your current app before you cancel, and keep it with your tax records.
  2. Start spentr on the free plan and capture this week’s receipts and drives alongside your old app.
  3. Once you trust the new log, cancel the old subscription. Keep prior years’ exports for at least three years.
